How Did This Accident Occur?

Most people who read about this crash probably would assume it happened because the driver was distracted or fatigued, but I’ve worked on enough accident investigations to know that a quality investigation should be based on facts, not assumptions.

It could turn out that the driver was distract, but what if another vehicle forced the Toyota off the road? Or what if the pickup had a problem with its brakes or steering mechanism? Investigators should keep those questions in mind as they gather evidence from the scene, data from the pickup and available witness statements or video footage of the crash. Cell phone records could show if the driver was distracted.

A forensic examination may be needed if investigators suspect a mechanical defect in the Toyota contributed to the crash, but most law enforcement agencies aren’t equipped to perform such tests, in my experience.

These steps should yield answers for the injured driver and his family about how this crash happened.
