Accident Report
July 23, 2026, Sheldon Rangel was killed and another person was injured due to a van versus train accident at approximately 2:00 p.m. near State Highway 81.
According to authorities, 25-year-old Sheldon Rangel was traveling in a westbound Mercedes-Benz delivery van on a private road at a railroad crossing near the C.R. 414 and State Highway 81 when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the van was struck by a train at the railroad crossing. It was noted in reports that since the crossing was on a private road, it was not equipped with crossing arms or a siren.
Both Rangel and the person who had been behind the wheel of the van reportedly sustained critical injuries as a result of the collision. They were each transported to area medical facilities by EMS in order to receive immediate treatment. Reports state that Rangel later succumbed to his injuries. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
When it comes to accidents that happen at uncontrolled railroad crossings, many people are quick to make the assumption that they must have been a result of driver error. While that is a distinct possibility here—especially since, statistically speaking, human error plays a role in the majority of car accidents—I’m not so eager to settle on that conclusion without more information. Why? Because over the last three decades in which I have been in this career, I have seen plenty of cases in which thorough investigation managed to uncover evidence of causes that were far less likely. Sometimes things turn out to have been different from how they initially appeared on the surface.
For the record, I’m not trying to give the impression that I have access to more details about this specific accident that are not yet publicly available. As far as I am aware, driver error remains on the table as a possible cause. However, I would like to point out that, hypothetically, it could have been a result of something gone wrong with the Mercedes-Benz itself rather than driver error. For example, what if the van had been dealing with brake failure? Or perhaps its throttle had somehow gotten stuck in the open position? I do understand that these things are not very likely, but that does not mean they should automatically be ruled out without even being considered.
An in-depth vehicle inspection would be able to bring to light any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that played a role in the wreck which might otherwise have flown unnoticed under the radar. Hopefully investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—get one done. That way nothing important will inadvertently be allowed to slip through the cracks. After all, the people affected by this accident—especially the loved ones left behind by the deceased victim—deserve to be given a clear and detailed understanding not only of how the wreck occurred, but also why. Surface-level investigation just won’t cut it.
