Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Whenever mechanical issues are mentioned after a serious truck wreck, my concern is whether or not experienced investigators had a chance to look at the truck. Frankly, authorities rarely have the kind of tools and training to examine a truck for defects or otherwise identify issues related to poor maintenance.

There are some truck drivers out there whose employers simply don’t care about their safety, and they have them operate trucks that are in poor condition. Other times, though, a mechanical issue can seemingly come out of nowhere, which can be a sign that the manufacturer messed up long before the driver got behind the wheel.

Maybe authorities here had the time, tools, and training needed to pinpoint the exact cause of this crash. But if they just wrote all of this off as a vague “mechanical issue” without actually finding the source, they may have failed to actually address the problem that caused this accident.
