Accident Report
May 6, 2026, Elijah Anthony Dubose sustained fatal injuries following a semi-truck accident at around 6:00 a.m. at a rest stop off of I-85.
According to initial details about the accident, it took place at the entrance to the Anderson Southbound Rest Area. The rest stop is in the Piercetown area.
Authorities say there was an 18-wheeler “illegally parked” along the side of the road outside the entrance to the rest area. There, a car somehow crashed into the back of the parked 18-wheeler.
Due to the collision, one person from the car died. Reports identified that victim as 28-year-old Elijah Anthony Dubose. Authorities did not report any other injuries. At this time, additional details are unavailable.
How Did This Accident Occur?
Most of the time when folks see a car crash into a parked vehicle along a highway, they’ll just automatically blame the car driver. But with authorities alleging the truck driver broke the law, folks may wonder, “Does that mean the truck driver is at fault for this crash?” The answer, as usual, is that it depends on a whole lot of details that aren’t clear right now. Let me explain.
A better question one can ask is this: Would the victim still be alive if the truck driver parked their truck safely and legally? Sometimes, the answer can be no. Investigations could find that the car leaving its lane happened for reasons that were far more serious than anything a truck driver could have done. A medical emergency, a vehicle defect, falling asleep at the wheel, etc.
However, evidence could show that the car driver would have been okay if they had a clear, safe place to go off the road. That’s exactly why commercial truck drivers have rules to follow for where and when they can stop their vehicles. If an accident reconstruction shows that the truck illegally parking outside the rest stop played a significant role in the crash itself, then it could be that the truck being illegally parked was the ultimate cause of this fatal accident.
That’s why it’s important to know if authorities are looking into this crash beyond just looking for potential charges to file. I’ve been a part of hundreds of commercial vehicle accident investigations. They should be mapping out the crash scene, pulling cellphone and vehicle data, checking company records, looking at the truck driver’s hour logs and training, inspecting the victim’s car for defects, looking for any and all camera footage, etc.
Only by putting all the pieces together can anyone say if this was all one person’s negligence leading to a fatal crash or if one or both of the drivers just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Either way, the victim’s loved ones deserve to know the full story, and holding a truck driver accountable for illegally parking along a highway may only be part of that story.
