A 58-year-old man was in a Kenworth semi-trailer going along I-20. The truck somehow lost control, and it crashed. The driver sustained serious injuries as a result.

How Did This Accident Occur?

With any single-vehicle truck accident, people’s minds might immediately go to some of the more common factors. Distracted driving, fatigue, unsafe speeds, etc. However, I’ve been a part of literally hundreds of truck accident investigations. There is a lot more that can go wrong than with typical cars, and truck drivers don’t always have that much control over these situations.

Just as a hypothetical, did a mechanical issue lead to the crash? That can present significant challenges for investigators. It would raise questions about the truck’s maintenance history, how regularly it was serviced, if the driver’s employer was cutting corners for financial reasons, if they were using a cheap, unscrupulous repair shop, or if there was some unusual, unforeseeable defect that led to the crash. I rarely ever see authorities conduct inspections thorough enough to sort all of that out on their own. So if independent accident reconstructionists don’t step in where their efforts fall short, important information can easily slip through the cracks.

Maybe that’s not what happened here, but that’s the kind of mindset needed for any serious commercial truck wreck. If nothing else, it can help give drivers an opportunity to tell their side of the story as thoroughly and as fairly as possible. It remains to be seen if that’s happening here.
