Yates County, NY — October 29, 2025, injuries were reported following a school bus accident around 7:28 a.m. along State Route 54.
According to initial details about the accident, it happened outside of Benton, east of Penn Yan at NY-54 and Pre-Emption Road.
Investigators said that a Penn Yan Central School District bus was going along the highway. At the intersection, a Seneca County Sheriff’s Office vehicle allegedly ran a stop sign, and the vehicles collided. The bus overturned as a result.
Reports say that an unspecified number of people had non-life-threatening injuries. No further information is available at this time.

With both vehicles here involving government agencies, it’s important that folks realize the sort of challenge that can present for victims and families. Like any organization, their priority is going to be avoiding responsibility, not doing right by the victims.
To make matters worse, there are often special rules regarding when and how to hold a government agency responsible. This can vary from county to county, and navigating such a legal maze often requires steps early on to gather evidence and prepare for those twists and turns.
So while it may seem straight-forward that authorities accused someone of running a stop sign here, the path that follows will likely be anything but straight-forward or simple. As such, it’s best to ensure the victims and families involved are prepared for those potential challenges.
