Authorities said a 2019 Freightliner semi-truck with engine problems was heading east with its hazard lights on, struggling to reach 15 mph, when it was hit from behind by a Honda Clarity. The smaller vehicle ended up wedged under the truck’s trailer.

Honda driver Samantha Xiongnhiathao, 50, of Fresno and her 17-year-old daughter died in the crash near Road 14 1/2, according to authorities.

The truck driver was not injured, authorities said.

Authorities have not released any additional information about the Madera County crash at this time.

How Did This Accident Occur?

Some people may assume the Honda driver was to blame for this crash, but to me this accident warrants some additional scrutiny for the trucking company.

Did it knowingly put a truck with mechanical issues on the road? Did it neglect to complete needed repairs or maintenance work on the truck? Did the driver follow company policies when he chose to keep going, despite the truck’s engine problems?

These are the kind of questions that may prove who truly was responsible for this crash. If authorities won’t dig deep enough to find answers, the grieving family may have to look elsewhere to address their lingering questions.
