According to initial details about the crash, it took place along eastbound lanes of the highway near Exit 24 at the I-87 interchange.
Investigators said that 33-year-old Roz Muhammad Said and a 35-year-old man were in a box truck traveling eastbound on the New York State Thruway. An 18-year-old Latham man was in a Honda sedan. For reasons unclear, the truck and the Honda collided, then veered off-road and crashed along the ditch.
Roz Muhammad Said, Said’s passenger, and the Honda driver all reportedly had non-life-threatening injuries. Right now, additional details are unavailable.
How Did This Accident Occur?
It’s possible that this crash involved a common factor, such as distracted driving, unsafe speeds, or someone following too closely. That said, people often jump to the conclusion that crashes like this have to involve one or both drivers doing something wrong. It’s also important to investigate the possibility the problem that caused the crash happened before any of the drivers got behind the wheel.
For example, I’ve seen many examples across hundreds of truck accident investigations of trucking companies causing accidents. One scenario that comes up quite a bit is a lack of proper maintenance. Companies cheap out on repairs or skip them altogether to cut costs, sending their drivers out in a ticking time bomb that’s inevitably going to break down.
Sometimes, that leads to catastrophic failures which cause truck drivers to lose control and crash, hurting and even killing people. That’s not something that an ordinary, run-of-the-mill crash investigation is likely to address on its own, and the evidence pointing to those issues may slip through the cracks if investigations aren’t thorough enough.
I’m not saying that happened here, necessarily, but it’s important for crashes like this to be in the hands of experienced professionals who can catch those details. Otherwise, victims and families may be left trying to tell their story without all the facts.
