Commercial vehicle wrecks can present more significant challenges than people may realize. After all, they’re not just big car accidents. They involve unique factors and complex evidence that require significant experience and state-of-the-art tools to properly sort through. That’s why it can be crucial just to ask what efforts authorities have been making and whether or not those efforts are enough.
For example, did investigators take the time and resources needed to properly reconstruct the crash? Many assume authorities will conduct an in-depth analysis, but some departments lack the funding or expertise to fully investigate commercial vehicle wrecks. If they didn’t have the means to do the investigations, did they seek help from professional investigations who did?
Additionally, did authorities look into potential mechanical failures or maintenance issues with the semi-truck? Federal regulations require trucking companies to maintain their vehicles properly, but that doesn’t always happen. If investigators didn’t check service records, brake conditions, or other mechanical components, they may have overlooked a critical factor.
Finally, was all available electronic data secured? Modern commercial trucks have onboard data recorders that track speed, braking, and driver activity before a crash. Additionally, dashcams, GPS tracking, and even cellphone records can provide crucial context. If authorities failed to secure this information in time, it could be lost or overwritten.
If authorities can show they have clear, convincing answers to these questions, then it’s likely a sign their investigations were thorough. However, if victims and families feel unsatisfied by the responses, that can be a sign that the crash needs more thorough, independent investigations. Otherwise, important details may slip through the cracks.
