How Did This Accident Occur?
When people see accidents like this one—single-vehicle crashes that happen in the middle of the night—they tend to jump to the conclusion that it must have been caused by driver error. Honestly, it’s a safe bet, considering the fact that human error does play a role in the majority of car accidents, statistically speaking. However, I have been in this line of business for over three decades. In that time, I’ve seen plenty of similar cases in which evidence of less likely causes ended up being unearthed by the investigation. That is why, as a general rule, I don’t make assumptions.
To be clear, I’m not implying that I know more about this accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. I just want to point out that—while driver error is still on the table, as far as we know, as a possible cause—it could also have been caused by something wrong with the vehicle itself. Motor vehicles are complex machines; any number of things—for example tire blowout, throttle issues, steering problems, brake failure, et cetera—might have been behind the wreck.
On top of that, there is the fact that the vehicle overturned. Most people don’t know this, but the rollover tests that car manufacturers are required to pass do not actually do a very good job of simulating real-world scenarios. I would be interested to know whether or not a design flaw with the vehicle contributed to the fact that it rolled. There is a chance that the accident might have been survivable had it managed to remain safely upright.
Hopefully investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—get an in-depth vehicle inspection done by a trained professional in a laboratory setting. That way, any mechanical malfunctions, product defects, or design flaws that had a hand in the wreck can be brought to light, rather than being allowed to slip under the radar. After all, the people affected by this accident—the loved ones left behind by the victim—deserve a clear and detailed understanding of how it actually happened, and why. Surface-level investigation just can’t provide that kind of clarity.
