Accident Report
March 18, 2026, Roberto Cardona was injured due to a car accident at approximately 5:30 p.m. along the Interstate Highway 35W frontage road.
According to authorities, 20-year-old Roberto Cardona was traveling in a southbound Chevrolet Silverado on the I-35W frontage road at the S.H. 183 intersection when the accident took place. The intersection is controlled by a traffic signal. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, an eastbound Honda Civic entered the intersection at an unsafe time, purportedly running the red light. A collision consequently occurred between the Civic and the Silverado.
Cardona reportedly sustained serious injuries over the course of the accident. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
At first glance, this might seem like an open-and-shut case of driver error. We know that preliminary reports say that the Civic ran a red light, but I can’t help but to wonder if that’s actually what happened here. That’s not to say I am privy to information about this case that nobody else has; I just want to suggest a hypothetical, no matter how far-fetched.
Traffic signals are excellent tools. They are dependable and widely used for intersection control. However, that does not mean that they are infallible. Hopefully investigators think to look at whether or not the traffic light was working properly at the time of this accident. There is a chance, however slim, that the traffic light was malfunctioning that day and gave the vehicles opposing signals, leading to a collision in the intersection.
I hope that investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—are being thorough and openminded with their work. That way the people were affected by this accident get real answers that show a complete picture, not just bits and pieces clouded over by flimsy but convenient excuses.
