How Did This Accident Occur?
When people see a single-vehicle car accident, they tend to assume the driver must have done something wrong. That’s obviously possible. People make mistakes. But I’ve learned throughout my career that unusual things can happen, and they rarely come to light in the preliminary reports.
For example, what if the victim’s vehicle had an unknown defect? Issues with tires, brakes, automatic driving systems, and steering mechanisms can easily cause loss of control or prevent a driver from slowing down. Or, vehicles may even have issues with airbags or seatbelts, leading the occupants to suffer more serious injuries than they would have in a safer vehicle.
The key is to make sure investigations are thorough enough to catch those possibilities or at least rule them out. Too often, I come across police reports where authorities glanced at the crash scene, drew their conclusions, and moved on without a second thought. This is why a lot of crashes fare better in the hands of independent investigators who take the time to look for things like defects. Even if they’re ultimately ruled out, it’s important that people know they’re getting a fair shake.
Do you think that’s being too cautious? Is there such a thing as too thorough an investigation? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
