Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When authorities have someone to blame for a crash, people might think that makes things open-and-shut. The reality is even a typical car accident can involve unique challenges that require a lot of experience and specialized equipment to properly navigate. It can surprise people when authorities don’t have that experience or those tools.
This is why a lot of crashes end up needing independent investigations. It isn’t that authorities can’t do their jobs. More often, it’s that their departments don’t prioritize accident reconstruction, so officers lack the time and resources needed for a proper investigation. If authorities here were able to be more thorough and get clear answers, that would be great to hear. In my experience, it’s just not the sort of thing I’d ever take for granted.
