How Did This Accident Occur?
After over three decades in this career, I’ve seen over and over how people tend to assume that car accidents are caused by driver error. That’s not surprising, considering the fact that human error does play a role in the majority of car wrecks. However, just because something happens much of the time does not automatically mean that it happens all of the time. I’ve seen plenty of cases over the years in which evidence of less likely causes ended up being unearthed by the investigation, despite how things initially appeared on the surface.
To be clear, I’m not implying that I know more about this specific accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. I simply want to point out that, hypothetically, something could have gone wrong with one or the other of the involved vehicles to cause the wreck. Hopefully the authorities are being meticulous and openminded as they investigate. Have they considered a mechanical malfunction, like brake failure or a steering mechanism issue? What about product defects that result in tire blowout?
On top of that, I would be interested to know whether or not the safety features in the BMW functioned. Did the airbags deploy properly and in a timely manner? What about the seatbelt? Did it work the way that it was designed to? You might be wondering why that matters. Well, if any of these features were faulty, then it is possible that it turned a survivable accident into a fatal one.
It might be prudent for investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—to get in-depth vehicle inspections done on the BMW and the Acura. That way any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that had a hand in the wreck will not be allowed to just fly under the radar. After all, the people affected by this accident—especially the loved ones left behind by the deceased—deserve real answers backed by solid evidence. Vague assumptions based on surface-level investigation just won’t cut it.
