Accident Report
Washington County, TX — June 6, 2026, Richard Havard was killed in an alleged drunk driver accident at about 4:50 p.m. in the 100 block of Lucky Lane near Brenham.
A preliminary accident report indicates that a homemade hot rod was heading southwest when it collided head-on with a 2020 Toyota RAV4 just east of State Highway 36, forcing the SUV to hit a mailbox.
A passenger in the hot rod, 66-year-old Richard Denman Havard, died June 13 from injuries suffered in the crash, according to the report, while the two drivers suffered minor injuries.
The hot rod driver, 69, admitted he had “a few beers” before the crash, according to another report, so authorities are seeking to have him charged with intoxication manslaughter.
Authorities have not released any additional information about the Washington County crash at this time.
How Did This Accident Occur?
The investigation into this accident needs to move beyond the scene of the crash if blood tests confirm the hot rod driver had been intoxicated. Someone should look into where he had been drinking before the collision.
It’s one thing if he had been drinking at home, but another if he had been at a bar or restaurant. Alcohol providers like those are not supposed to serve anyone who is obviously intoxicated. If they do, they can share responsibility under Texas law for injuries caused when that patron decides to get behind the wheel.
I don’t know if that applies in this instance, but the family of the passenger who died in this crash deserves to know everyone who may have played a role in the accident.
