According to authorities, 67-year-old Richard Garrison was traveling on a northeast bound Harley-Davidson motorcycle in the vicinity northeast of the Ranch to Market 473 intersection when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for reasons yet to be confirmed, the motorcycle failed to safely maintain its lane of travel. It was consequently involved in a single-vehicle collision in which it apparently struck a fence.

Garrison reportedly sustained serious injuries over the course of the accident. Additional details pertinaing to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

How Did This Accident Occur?

I’ve been in this line of business for over thirty years. In that time, I’ve had the opportunity to analyze hundreds of single-vehicle accidents. Over the years, I seem to have cultivated a bit of a pet peeve. I find it rather annoying when the cause of an accident is listed as “failure to maintain lane of travel”. Why? Because that is not a cause; it’s just a symptom. It will be up to the investigators to figure out what the cause of the lane deviation was.

Many people will be quick to assume that it was caused by driver error. While that is a possibility, I want to point out that it could hypothetically have been caused by something gone wrong with the motorcycle itself. What if it had had a tire blowout, for example? Or maybe something happened to its steering mechanism? An in-depth vehicle inspection done by trained professionals in a laboratory setting would bring to light any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that played a role.

Hopefully investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—get one done. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve to be given a clear and detailed understanding as to how and why it happened. That kind of clarity—real answers backed by solid evidence—just can’t be provided by surface-level investigation.
