How Did This Accident Occur?

There is still a lot we don’t know about what happened over the course of this wreck. Many people will take one look—a single-car accident late at night—and simply assume that driver error was the cause. Statistically, that would be a safe bet. However, I’ve had the chance to analyze hundreds of single-car accidents over the years. There have been plenty of instances where the investigation unearthed evidence of mechanical malfunction.

To be clear, I’m not saying I know any more about this accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. I just want to suggest a hypothetical. What if the car SUV suffered brake failure—either partial or total—at a critical moment? That could certainly have led to the collision. There is only one way to know for sure, though, and that is through a vehicle inspection. Unfortunately, these types of inspections are not routinely done in most accident investigations. If the authorities don’t end up getting one, maybe an independent investigator should. That way we can know for sure whether or not brake failure—or any number of other possible mechanical malfunctions or product defects—might have played a part.
