Accident Report
May 17, 2026, Reuben Serna was injured due to a single-car accident at approximately 1:30 a.m. along Farm to Market 631.
According to authorities, 37-year-old Reuben Serna was traveling in a southwest bound Honda CR-V at the F.M. 631 and F.M. 2512 intersection when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for reasons yet to be confirmed, the Honda was allegedly traveling at unsafe speeds. It was consequently involved in a single-vehicle collision in which it apparently struck a culvert.
Serna reportedly sustained serious injuries over the course of the accident. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
When people hear about single car accidents that take place in the middle of the night, most are quick to point the finger at the person who had been behind the wheel. That is an understandable reaction, especially when you consider the fact that human error plays a role in most car accidents. However, after over thirty years in this career, I’m not so quick to jump to conclusions. Why? Because, over the years I have seen plenty of similar cases in which the investigation ended up unearthing evidence of less likely causes.
To be completely transparent, I’m not trying to imply that I know more about this specific accident than anyone else outside of the investigation does. As far as I am aware, driver error—whether it was caused by fatigue, distraction, impairment, et cetera—remains on the table as a possible cause. However, I would like to suggest a hypothetical. What if, rather than driver error, the Honda’s excessive speed was a result of something gone wrong with the vehicle itself? For example, maybe it had experienced brake failure? Or perhaps the throttle had somehow gotten stuck in the open position? True, these things are not very likely, but neither are they outside of the realm of possibilities.
An in-depth vehicle inspection would be able to bring to light any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that had a hand in the wreck rather than allowing them to fly under the radar. Understand, these kinds of inspections are not routine in most accident investigations, so a special request might have to be made. If the authorities, for whatever reason, don’t get one done, then a third party investigation can always be brought in to do so, instead. Plus, it never hurts to have a second perspective go over everything and ensure that nothing important falls through the cracks.
After all, the people affected by this accident deserve to be given a clear and detailed understanding as to how and why it occurred. That kind of clarity—real answers backed by solid evidence—simply can’t be provided by surface-level investigation.
