Across decades and countless cases working with families affected by single-vehicle accidents, the same question comes up time and time again: How can they be sure the authorities are telling the whole story? Generally speaking, a prudent first step is to find out what all they’re investigating.

Did authorities secure phone records? Analyze road conditions? Examine road design, including lighting and signage? Inspect the vehicle for defects? Inspect the vehicle’s tires? Pull Engine Control Module data from the car, which can show things like speed, steering, and braking? Did they look for any nearby cameras which may have captured the incident on video?

Sometimes, families find authorities really covered their bases and did everything they could to let the evidence speak for itself. Too often, though, there are gaps in the investigations, and that could mean that getting the whole story will require independent investigators stepping in to fill in the gaps. How things were handled here remains to be seen, but finding out for sure is always a prudent first step for families in need of answers.
