Rhome, TX — January 22, 2026, a child lost their life and Ramona Rodriguez was injured in a car accident at about 3:45 p.m. along S.H. 114.

According to authorities, 60-year-old Ramona Rodriguez and an 8-year-old boy were traveling in a southeast bound Toyota Corolla at the Alliance Boulevard intersection when the accident took place.

Officials indicate that, for reasons yet to be confirmed, the Corolla was involved in a collision with a northwest bound Dodge Ram 2500 pickup truck and a southwest bound Acura TLX.

Rodriguez and the young boy from the Toyota each sustained critical injuries as a result of the wreck; the boy was flown to a hospital and Rodrigue was taken by ground ambulance in order to receive immediate treatment. The boy, however, was ultimately unable to overcome the severity of his injuries, having later been declared deceased.

Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

After crashes that leave a child dead and others seriously injured, early reports often focus on which vehicles were involved. But when the outcome is this severe, the more important issue is whether the right questions are being asked about how the collision unfolded.

Was the crash thoroughly investigated?
In a multi-vehicle collision at an intersection, a proper investigation should go far beyond noting directions of travel. Investigators should examine how each vehicle approached the intersection, how their paths overlapped, and what each driver was doing in the moments before impact. That can include mapping vehicle movements, reviewing damage patterns, and analyzing whether braking or steering occurred before the collision. The depth of this work often depends on the training and experience of the responding officers. Some investigators are equipped to reconstruct complex, multi-vehicle crashes, while others may conduct only a surface-level review. In cases involving a fatality, that difference matters.

Has anyone looked into a possible vehicle defect?
Even when multiple vehicles are involved, mechanical issues should not be overlooked. Brake performance, steering response, and throttle behavior on all vehicles deserve careful review. Larger pickup trucks, in particular, rely on systems that affect stopping distance and vehicle control. Modern vehicles also include electronic safety features that may assist with collision avoidance. If one of those systems failed or did not operate as intended, that may not be obvious without a detailed mechanical inspection.

Was all available electronic data collected?
Electronic data can be critical in understanding what happened before a serious crash. Vehicle systems may record speed, braking input, steering activity, and warning alerts in the seconds leading up to impact. Phone data can help determine whether distraction played a role, and nearby cameras may help establish timing and vehicle positions. This information is time-sensitive. If it is not preserved early, it can be lost, leaving important questions unanswered.

When a crash results in the loss of a child’s life and serious injuries to others, careful questions matter. A thorough investigation, close inspection of all vehicles involved, and full collection of electronic data help move the case beyond assumptions and toward a clearer understanding of how events unfolded.

Key Takeaways:

  • Fatal multi-vehicle crashes require detailed reconstruction, not quick conclusions.
  • Vehicle or system issues should be examined on every vehicle involved.
  • Electronic data can clarify driver actions in the moments before impact.
