How Did This Accident Occur?
People might see authorities claim that the pickup truck driver failed to stop, leading to the accident, and wonder why there aren’t any reported charges. It could be that authorities have just been working more behind the scenes and less in the public eye. This sort of thing typically happens due to inattention or just being impatient. But there could always be unusual circumstances authorities are considering.
For example, a lot of trucks pulling trailers are work vehicles. Could it be, hypothetically, that it wasn’t the driver that failed to stop but rather the vehicle? I’ve been a part of literally hundreds of investigations into work and commercial vehicle accidents. It would shock folks how often workers are forced to drive vehicles in states of disrepair because their employers refuse to keep up with regular maintenance. That could easily lead to something like worn brakes, making a serious crash all but inevitable.
That’s not something a preliminary crash investigation can generally address right away. That’s why it’s important for victims and families to know what authorities are doing behind the scenes. If they’re just dragging their feet or treating the crash like a low priority, then obviously that’s cause for concern. But if authorities can show they’re just being as thorough as possible to consider the full story before considering charges, that can be reassuring.
