Accident Report
May 13, 2026, one person was killed as the result of a car versus pedestrian accident around 2:03 a.m. along US Highway 82.
According to initial details about the accident, it happened east of Paris along Lamar Road near Sugar Hill Road.
Investigators said that a 69-year-old man was on foot at the time. A Dodge Ram was going westbound. In events not clear, the pickup struck the pedestrian.
Due to the accident, the pedestrian sustained fatal injuries. The driver was not hurt. Authorities did not report any recommended charges. Additional details are unavailable.
How Did This Accident Occur?
This early in the morning, people might think that a vehicle hitting a pedestrian in the roadway was just a matter of a pedestrian being in the wrong place at the wrong time. However, I often find that’s rooted in this belief that right-of-way is somehow the end-all-be-all of pedestrian accidents. That’s just not true.
Obviously, right-of-way is important. It would be just as concerning to see a pedestrian outside of a crosswalk as it would be to see a driver hit someone crossing a crosswalk. On top of that, though, investigators need to consider the conditions surrounding the accident. Was the pedestrian visible? Is the area well-lit? How fast was the driver going? Did alcohol contribute to the accident? Did a medical condition or some kind of emergency put the victim in the roadway? Is there an unusually high number of pedestrian accidents in this area?
In my experience, investigations that can address all of these questions are likely to get a victim’s loved ones the answers they deserve. Investigations that can’t likely only scratched the surface, and their work might need a second look to ensure nothing important slipped through the cracks.
