Accident Report

January 9, 2026, Paulino Cantu was killed as the result of a work accident that happened around 10:50 a.m. along Nelson Road.

It appears that the incident happened at Second Nature Compost, located near Nelson Road and Old Pearsall Road, southwest of San Antonio.

Reports said that 52-year-old Paulino Cantu was working on a machine’s hydraulics at the time. While doing so, Paulino Cantu somehow became binned beneath the machine. This ultimately resulted in fatal injuries, authorities said.

In an initial accident summary from OSHA, it appears officials recommended penalties for at least two “serious” alleged violations. Right now, further details are unconfirmed.

How Did This Accident Occur?

It’s obviously concerning to see OSHA recommend penalties following a fatal accident, as that often suggests that there was something wrong at the job site that contributed to the deadly accident. I’ve often seen accidents like this happen due to poor training or supervision, workers being forced to do things which are unnecessarily dangerous, or workers not being provided with proper tools to do a job safely. I can’t say if anything like that happened here without seeing more specifics, though.

Hopefully those details are available to the family behind the scenes. It would surprise people how may calls I get from folks who find themselves months following a deadly work accident still asking the same questions they had on day one. Even in situations where OSHA is recommending penalties, they still might not get all the facts for the worker’s family. It’d be encouraging to hear that authorities handling this accident have been more open with their findings. It’s just not the sort of thing I’d expect anyone to take for granted.
