How Did This Accident Occur?
Initial report say a semi-truck drove off the road after swerving to avoid another vehicle that was changing lanes. Did the driver make too sudden of a move? Or did the load in his trailer shift, causing him to lose control? I’m not claiming to know anything about this crash beyond what has been reported so far, but after 30-plus years handling commercial vehicle accidents I have some ideas about what investigators should be looking at as they reconstruct this accident.
The truck driver’s family deserves answers to all of their lingering questions about this crash, and it’s up to authorities to provide them. They can scrutinize witness statements, data from the truck and any available video footage, but if a forensic examination of the truck is needed, it likely will have to be done by an independent expert. That is because in my experience most law enforcement agencies don’t have the time or training for such technical work. That is not a knock on them. I just think it’s important for families to know about the potential limitations of the official investigation.
Do you think that is fair? Let me know in the comments.
