How Did This Accident Occur?
Over the last three decades, I’ve had the opportunity to analyze hundreds of truck accidents. Most people are quick to point the finger at the truck drivers, but I’ve seen plenty of cases in which evidence of less likely causes ended up being unearthed by the investigation. It’s because of that that I hesitate to jump to conclusions. I think it would be prudent, in this case, to wait until the investigation is complete and its findings have been made public.
By the way, I’m not insinuating that I know more about this specific wreck than anyone else outside of the investigation. As far as I am aware, driver error—whether it was due to distraction, fatigue, impairment, or something else entirely—has yet to be ruled out. However, might I suggest that something went wrong with one or the other of the trucks themselves to cause the wreck? What if there was a tire blowout? Maybe brake failure or a steering mechanism issue occurred? Honestly, these vehicles are extremely complex machines; it could have been any number of things.
Hopefully, the investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—get an in-depth vehicle inspection done on the trucks. That way, any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that played a role won’t be allowed to fly under the radar. On top of that, I hope they look into the companies with which the trucks are affiliated. I would be interested to know whether or not any corners were cut by skipping regular inspections or required maintenance on these vehicles. If so, it’s possible that people who were not even at the scene had a hand in its outcome.
In the end, the people affected by this accident deserve to be given a clear and detailed understanding of not only how it occurred, but why. That kind of clarity simply can’t be provided by surface-level investigation.
