Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Crashes out in rural areas like this can sometimes be uniquely complex. Rural police departments don’t often have the resources and personnel that a large city department does. As a result, officers might lack the time or tools they need to do a proper accident reconstruction. This is why I always talk about the importance of following up with authorities early and often.

Simply put, if victims and families want to be sure the whole story is told fairly, they need to be sure investigators are asking the right questions. If it seems authorities are able to address all concerns thoroughly, that’s generally a sign they’re doing good investigations and letting the evidence speak for itself. But if authorities start to leave doubts and concerns, that may be a sign that independent investigators need to step in and pickup the slack.
