How Did This Accident Occur?

When it comes to single-vehicle car accidents that happen in the middle of the night, most people are content to assume they are a result of driver error. I’ve had the opportunity to analyze thousands of car accidents over the last three decades, though. In that time, I’ve seen plenty of similar cases in which evidence of causes that went against the grain of stereotype ended up being unearthed by the investigation. That is why, as a general rule, I don’t like to jump to conclusions.

To be clear, I don’t know more about this specific accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. As far as I know, driver error—whether it was caused by distraction, fatigue, impairment, et cetera—has yet to be ruled out as the cause. However, I would like to point out that, hypothetically, something could have gone wrong with the vehicle to cause it to crash. What if, for example, it was dealing with brake failure? Or perhaps the throttle got stuck in the open position? Have tire failure or steering mechanism issues been considered? An in-depth vehicle inspection would bring to light any mechanical malfunctions or product defects which might otherwise have flown under the radar.

Hopefully, investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—put in the time and effort necessary to get one done, even though it isn’t generally routine. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve to be given a clear and detailed understanding as to not only how it took place, but why. Surface-level investigation just can’t provide that kind of clarity.
