How Did This Accident Occur?
It’s not clear at this point which of these vehicles had the right of way. Did one of them run a red light? Was the signal light working properly? Was one of these drivers dealing with a mechanical issue, like faulty brakes or a balky steering mechanism? These are the kind of questions that authorities must consider as they work to reconstruct this crash.
Investigators likely will rely on witness statements, physical evidence, data from the vehicles and any available video footage as they try to piece together what happened at this Salt Lake City intersection. Cell phone records could show what each driver was doing at the time.
An outside expert may be needed if authorities suspect a mechanical issue contributed to this crash. Both vehicles should be examined in a laboratory setting, which is beyond the scope of what most law enforcement agencies can handle on their own, in my experience.
A thorough investigation should provide answers to any lingering questions that the families may have about this crash.
