How Did This Accident Occur?

It is not clear at this point how or why these two vehicles collided. Did one rear-end the other? Did they crash while changing lanes? Was one of these drivers fatigued or distracted? Did one vehicle have a mechanical issue that contributed to this accident? I don’t claim to know the answer to these questions, but they are the kind of things that authorities should consider as they work to reconstruct this accident.

That usually starts by gathering physical evidence, witness statements, data from both vehicles and any available video footage. Cell phone records could show what each driver was doing at the time.

If investigators suspect a mechanical problem may have led to this crash, an outside expert likely will be needed to conduct a forensic examination of the vehicles. That is not something that most law enforcement agencies have the time or training to do, in my experience, but it could help provide the Ford driver’s family with answers about what happened on I-85.
