How Did This Accident Occur?
This crash leaves a number of questions that only a full investigation can answer, in my experience. Why was the semi-truck disabled? Was it parked on the shoulder or on the road? Did the driver put out flares or warning triangles? Was the Chevrolet driver distracted, perhaps by a cell phone? Did the SUV have an issue with its brakes or steering mechanism?
Investigators likely will work to reconstruct this accident by poring over physical evidence, witness statements, data from the vehicles and any available video footage. Cell phone records could show if the Chevrolet driver was texting or interacting with an app at the time.
If authorities suspect a mechanical problem contributed to this crash, both vehicles should undergo a forensic examination in a laboratory setting. Such inspections typically are beyond the capabilities of law enforcement, so an outside expert could be needed to provide the Chevrolet driver’s family with a clear picture of what happened on I-75.
