Accident Report
Montgomery County, MO — August 3, 2026, a Wellsville man was killed in a truck accident at about 1:30 p.m. on Interstate 70/Dwight D. Eisenhower Highway.
Authorities said a westbound 2026 International semi-truck was slowing for traffic caused by an earlier accident when it was struck from behind by a 2020 Volvo semi-truck. The Volvo truck hit a barrier after going off the left side of the road, while the International truck went off the right side.
The Volvo driver, a 65-year-old Wellsville man, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, according to authorities. His name has not been made public yet.
The International driver, a 63-year-old man from Magnolia, TX, suffered minor injuries, authorities said.
Authorities have not released any additional information about the Montgomery County crash at this time.
How Did This Accident Occur?
Did traffic stop suddenly? Did the International semi-truck have working brake lights? Was the Volvo driver distracted? Did his truck have an issue with its brakes or steering mechanism? I don’t claim to know the answer to these questions, but they are the type of things that authorities should consider as they investigate this crash.
Data from the trucks’ engine control modules should shed some light on this accident since they record speed, braking and steering inputs. Physical evidence, witness statements and any available video footage should help investigators reconstruct the crash, while cell phone records could show what each driver was doing at the time.
Investigators also should look at the trucking companies behind these two vehicles and their drivers. Were these drivers qualified and properly trained? Were the trucks overdue for any scheduled maintenance or repairs? This inquiry should help determine everyone who may have played a role in this crash.
The Volvo driver’s family deserves to know as much as possible about what caused this accident.
