Accident Report
Lafeyette County, MO — March 19, 2026, one person was killed and two others were injured in a truck accident at about 2:10 p.m. on Interstate 70 south of Higginsville.
Authorities said westbound traffic had slowed for road construction when a 2019 Freightliner semi-truck crashed into another semi-truck, a 2019 International, then rolled into the path of a 2015 Infiniti Q50 and a third semi-truck, a 2024 Freightliner. The third truck overturned as well, as the accident shut down I-70 traffic in both directions.
The driver of the first truck, a 43-year-old Georgie man whose name has not been made public yet, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, according to authorities.
The other three drivers involved in the crash were hospitalized as well, authorities said. The second truck driver, a 41-year-old Virginia man, and the driver of the car, a 26-year-old man from Columbia, MO, were seriously injured, while the third truck driver, a 70-year-old Alabama man, suffered minor injuries.
Authorities have not released any additional information about the Lafayette County crash at this time.
How Did This Accident Occur?
There are a lot of moving parts of investigators unravel here, starting with whether this crash could have been avoided altogether. Was there adequate warning to drivers that they were approaching this construction zone? Did the first semi-truck have a mechanical problem that affected its brakes or steering? Did the truck it hit have working brake and taillights? Why did the two trucks overturn? Was their cargo unstable because it wasn’t loaded properly?
Investigators must address these questions so those affected by this crash will have a clear understanding of what happened here. That means scrutinizing data from the trucks’ engine control modules, evidence from the scene, witness statements and any available dashcam videos to provide answers to the questions that may be lingering after the crash.
