How Did This Accident Occur?
Before I share any thoughts about this accident, I think its important to note that the truck driver reportedly suffered his injuries while trying to prevent the gas spill from spreading to a nearby gas station. I think we can all agree that the driver’s heroic, selfless actions probably kept a bad situation from being worse. What’s more, he did so at great cost to himself.
As far as the accident itself, there are few details, but we can reason that whatever car collided with the gas truck was significantly smaller than the truck hauling the gas trailer. In those scenarios, the passenger car usually comes off worse. Did that collision occur in just the right manner to set these events in motion? It’s possible. Was there an issue with the tanker that made the gas spill more likely? As the moment, that’s unknowable. Was the driver provided with proper protective equipment to deal with the situation, or was he doing the best he could with what he had? Are there any nearby businesses or residences with surveillance cameras that could shed some more light on exactly what happened before, during, and after this crash?
These are all important questions, which an investigation will hopefully answer. From what’s already known, I suspect that investigation will be far more complex than your typical crash investigation. Given what I do for a living, I’m well aware of the reams of rules and regulations that apply to commercial truck drivers. When those commercial trucks haul hazardous materials, there’s a whole separate stack of regulations on top of the first set of rules. This matters because you could probably count on your hands how many people know those regulations and have a background in accident reconstruction. Hopefully, authorities bring in the correct people to investigate this incident. Particularly, given the heroic exploits of the truck driver, risking himself and suffering terrible consequences to protect the community, a thorough understanding of what happened is the least he deserves.
