Accident Report
Amarillo, TX — June 4, 2026, a police officer was injured in an alleged drunk driver accident at about 2 a.m. in the 6700 block of Coulter Street.
Authorities said a 2009 Chevrolet Suburban crashed into the back of an Amarillo police car near the intersection with Bayswater Road, causing both vehicles to spin out.
The police officer was hospitalized with serious injuries, according to authorities.
The other driver was arrested after police determined he was intoxicated, authorities said. He was charged with intoxication assault with a vehicle.
Authorities have not released any additional information about the Randall County crash at this time.
How Did This Accident Occur?
Police likely will investigate this crash fully because one of their own was involved, but this probe should extend beyond the scene of the accident if blood tests prove the other driver was intoxicated. Then they should look into where he had been drinking before the crash.
That kind of investigation often is not a priority for law enforcement agencies, but the officer’s family deserves to know everyone who may have played a role in this crash.
If the driver had been drinking at a bar or restaurant, that alcohol provider could share responsibility under Texas law for any injuries he caused if he was served while obviously intoxicated. The only way to know if that applies in this instance is to look into the driver’s activities.
