How Did This Accident Occur?

Most people who read about this crash would probably assume it was caused by a distracted driver, but what if the BMW had an issue with its brakes or steering mechanism? Or if another vehicle forced it into the light pole? I don’t have any particular knowledge of this crash, but I have been involved in accident investigations for more than 30 years, so I like to think I know what questions should be asked.

Investigators should consider all possible scenarios, even if they’re unlikely, while they’re going over evidence from the scene, witness statements, data from the BMW’s engine control module and any available video footage of the crash. An independent expert may be needed to examine the vehicle if there is any indication that a mechanical issue contributed to this crash.
