How Did This Accident Occur?
It would be easy to simply attribute this crash to driver error or fatigue, but I’ve been part of enough accident investigations in my career to know that it is never a good idea to rely on assumptions. It is much better to have facts to rely on in trying to reconstruct a crash like this, but investigators much consider possibilities beyond a tired driver.
What was the other vehicle doing that forced the Nissan to react? Did the Nissan have a mechanical problem that affected its steering or brakes? Was the object the Nissan struck located in a dangerous place?
Investigators will rely on evidence from the scene, data from the Nissan’s engine control module, witness statements and available traffic cam footage to piece together the events that led to this crash, but an outside expert may be needed for a forensic examination of the car. My experience has shown me that many law enforcement agencies don’t have the time or training for such exams.
