How Did This Accident Occur?

Most folks who read about this crash would probably assume the Chevrolet driver was to blame for this crash, but I’ve learned over more than 30 years of being involved in accident investigations that assumptions have no place in the process. It’s important to wait until all of the facts are in before reaching any conclusions. That time isn’t in the hours after the crash, when the initial reports are written. It takes an investigation to sort out what happened on Simmons Drive.

What if the Chevrolet driver had a medical emergency? What if her SUV, which is more than 20 years old, had an issue with its brakes or steering mechanism?

These are issues that investigators must consider as they work to reconstruct this accident, although confirmation likely will have to come from outside experts if one of these scenarios is suspected. A doctor would have to confirm any medical diagnosis, while a qualified expert should examine the Chevrolet in a laboraty setting to determine if a mechanical issue contribued to this crash. Most law enforcement agencies lack the time or training for such vehicle exams, in my experience.

A thorough investigation should provide answers so both drivers and their families will know how this crash unfolded.
