How Did This Accident Occur?

If this was just one person crossing the road in the middle of the night, I’d be more open to the possibility that they were just crossing a road when or where they shouldn’t have been. Maybe that is what happened here. However, three people crossing the road makes me wonder why they thought they could cross safely. Was there some factor that led them to believe this? For example, did the vehicle have its headlights on? Was it going faster than the pedestrians thought? Was there some other extenuating factor surrounding the accident, like alcohol or some kind of emergency? If nothing else, it’s important to answer questions like these so the victim’s loved ones know they’re getting the whole story. If authorities haven’t looked into these things, they might be missing something important.
