Maverick County, TX — December 21, 2023, Nicolas Gaona was killed in a truck accident at approximately 7:00 p.m. along U.S. Highway 57.
According to reports, 67-year-old Nicolas Gaona was traveling in a southwest bound Nissan Pathfinder on U.S. 57 in the vicinity southwest of the entrance to the Rockin’ L Ranch when the accident took place.
Officials indicate that, for unknown reasons, the Nissan was traveling southwest in the northeast bound lane of the highway. This wrong-way situation resulted in a collision with an oncoming Freightliner. The crash caused the Nissan to veer off of the roadway and into the roadside ditch facing southeast. Gaona was reportedly ejected from the Nissan during the accident, coming to rest partially in the shoulder and partially in the southwest bound lane. The 18-wheeler jackknifed, coming to a stop with the cab facing east and the trailer facing north and blocking both lanes of the highway. Gaona reportedly incurred fatal injuries as a result of the accident.
