Pecos County, TX — July 20, 2024, Nicholas Callaway was killed and another was injured in a head-on car accident at about 8:00 a.m. along F.M. 1053.
According to authorities, 25-year-old Nicholas Callaway was traveling in a northbound GMC Sierra pickup truck on Farm to Market 1053 when the accident took place.

Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, a southbound Ford F-150 pickup truck failed to safely maintain its lane of travel. It reportedly veered into the northbound lane which caused Callaway to swerve into the southbound lane in an attempt to avoid a collision. However, the Ford apparently swerved back into the southbound lane at the same time and a crash took place between the two pickup trucks.
Callaway suffered fatal injuries as a result of the wreck and was declared deceased at the scene. The other driver incurred reportedly severe injuries, according to reports, and was transported to a local medical facility.

Additional details remain unconfirmed, but authorities mentioned looking into alcohol as a possible factor here. That’s not very common at this time of day, which makes me wonder if this is just standard procedure for the particular department handling these investigations or if there is clear evidence that raised these suspicions. At 2:00 a.m., for example, it would be irresponsible not to look into alcohol. 8:00 a.m. is a far less common time to see alcohol, though it’s not unheard of. In fact, I’ve handled cases against negligent alcohol providers who over-served drivers to the point that even if they didn’t touch another drop of alcohol six hours after leaving the bar, they’d still be too drunk to drive. Have authorities found anything like that contributing to this accident?
