Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
With a serious crash like this, it’s important to know what factors have and have not been investigated. Following up early on with authorities can be the difference between a family getting the answers they deserve and a major issue slipping through the cracks.
For example, did authorities preserve the vehicle somewhere safe so that a professional accident reconstructionist can inspect the car for potential defects? Steering issues, brake failure, faulty electronics, airbags, seatbelts, lane assistance systems—there are all kinds of things that can go wrong with modern vehicles. If authorities don’t ensure the vehicle receives a thorough inspection, the car may be impounded or repaired before a serious problem is brought to light.
I’m not saying this accident involved a defect, but it’s an important possibility to at least rule out. Generally speaking, if families find that authorities are overlooking something like that, it could be a sign the investigations aren’t really getting the attention they deserve.
