Moore County, TX — June 5, 2024, Nathaniel Harden was killed as the result of an 18-wheeler accident at around 11:00 p.m. along U.S. 87.
According to information about the accident, it happened along northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 87 between Dumas and TX-354.

Investigators said that 58-year-old Nathaniel Harden was in a Chevy Equinox going along U.S. 87. Up ahead was an 18-wheeler along the right side of the highway parked at a weight station. Possibly due to fatigue, according to officials, Harden’s vehicle went to the right into the weigh station area where it crashed into the back of the 18-wheeler. As a result, Harden was killed. No other injuries were reported.

To be clear up front, I don’t know specifics about what caused this crash nor would I ever pretend to. It’s very possible fatigue did lead to this crash. However, it’s always important after accidents like this to know where police are getting their conclusions from. Do they have compelling evidence to support their claims? Or, are they just making an assumption based on what the common answer is? Too often, it’s the latter, but families don’t always realize they’re not really getting the whole story.
Simply put, officers and their departments are not created equal. Some have teams of dedicated accident reconstructionists who are able to rule out even unlikely possible factors. Other departments, however, may not have experienced officers, may not have the right state-of-the-art equipment for a deadly truck wreck, or may be too quick to pull officers to work on other responsibilities. This is when important details slip through the cracks, and families who put their trust in the authorities find themselves out in the wind left with unanswered questions.
Did a mechanical defect occur? Was the victim experiencing medical issues? Is there a problem with this particular stretch of road? Were there any issues with visibility in the area? Common or not, a proper investigation needs to be able to consider these kinds of possibilities. It should leave a family feeling assured they’re at least getting all the facts and not missing anything important. Unless authorities here have been more thorough behind the scenes, my concern is that there may be stones left unturned which could help shed light on what really went wrong here.
