Accident Report
June 8, 2026, Nancy Owens and another person were injured due to a car accident at approximately 1:00 p.m. along State Highway 123.
According to authorities, 67-year-old Nancy Owens was traveling in a northbound Hyundai Elantra on State Highway 123 at the Old Bastrop Road intersection when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the Elantra allegedly attempted a left turn at an unsafe time. It was consequently involved in a collision with a southbound GMC Sierra occupied by a 26-year-old man.
Owens reportedly sustained serious injuries as a result of the wreck. The man from the pickup truck suffered minor injuries, as well, according to reports. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
It might be tempting, without more information, to make the assumption that this is an open-and-shut case of driver error. While that is a distinct possibility, after over three decades in this line of business, I’m not so eager to settle on that conclusion, just yet. Why? Because over the years I have seen plenty of cases in which thorough investigation managed to uncover evidence of causes far less likely. Sometimes, things just don’t turn out to have been how they initially appeared on the surface.
I’m not trying to give the appearance that I have more information about this specific accident than is already available to the public, by the way. I simply want to point out that, hypothetically, the wreck could have been caused by something other than driver error. A quick Google Maps search will tell you that this intersection is controlled by a traffic signal; while excellent tools, they are not infallible. What if the signal was malfunctioning and gave contradicting lights to the two involved drivers, and that was what led to the collision? I do understand that the chances are slim, but that does not mean that it is impossible.
Hopefully the investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—are meticulous and openminded enough to consider less likely things like this in order to ensure that nothing important slips through the cracks. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve more than the vague assumptions that often result from surface-level investigation.
