Jefferson County, AL — October 16, 2024, injuries were reported after a multi-vehicle accident involving two or more semi-trucks on Interstate 459 in Jefferson County.
According to preliminary reports, the accident happened around 3:20 p.m. along I-459 near mile marker 16. Investigators say that a southbound 18-wheeler may have gone out of control for unknown reasons. The truck swerved into the median and collided with another tractor-trailer, then continued onward and crashed into several other vehicles in the oncoming lanes.
Responders extricated a trapped truck driver and transported them to an area hospital. Another person was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries, while three more were treated and released at the scene.

However, it’s always best not to jump to any conclusions before experienced professionals can investigate further. Multi-vehicle wrecks, particularly those with 18-wheelers, are rarely straightforward.
Investigators are still working out the specifics, and perhaps most important to learn is how and why the 18-wheeler went off-course in the first place. Human error is one possibility, of course, but they can’t rule out mechanical defects or malfunctions like tire problems or power steering failure. To that end, a careful examination of dashcam footage, witness statements, and the vehicles’ onboard data is essential. A full investigation will also look into the records of both the driver and his employer for any discrepancies in his driving history or training. Should any unsafe corporate policies or neglected maintenance be found, the company may share responsibility for what happened.
Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and get answers for those affected by the crash. Even if it means conducting an independent investigation to pick up where police left off.
