Chula Vista, CA — November 5, 2024, 17 people were injured when a pickup truck and a MTS trolley collided on Industrial Boulevard in Chula Vista.
Authorities say the incident happened around 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Industrial Blvd and L Street. Preliminary investigation suggests a Metro Transit trolley was northbound when the pickup truck allegedly broadsided it in the L Street crossing.
One person in the truck and sixteen aboard the trolley were injured in the crash. Reports don’t indicate the extent of anyone’s injuries.

Early reports say the pickup “broadsided” the trolley, but right now nobody can say with any certainty how or why that might have happened. Until investigators have a chance to put more of the puzzle together it’s best not to jump to any conclusions. Some might have quickly jumped to driver mistakes like speeding or texting, but for all anyone knows right now the truck hit a bad patch of road or had a mechanical malfunction and couldn’t stop.
It is possible this collision has a simple explanation? Of course. Could things also be more complex than they seem? Absolutely. Only clear evidence can really say one way or another what happened here, and everyone hurt in that crash deserves to know the whole story—both for peace of mind, and to ensure that the right parties are held responsible. Will authorities invest the time and effort needed to get those people the truth?
