Accident Report
July 18, 2026, a motorcyclist was injured due to a truck accident at approximately 5:45 p.m. along Interstate Highway 44.
According to authorities, a 34-year-old man from Lockport, New York, was traveling in an eastbound 18-wheeler on I-44 in the vicinity between S.H. H and Old Route 66 when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the truck apparently experienced a tire blowout. As a result, it veered into the median where it overturned and caught on fire. Debris from the wrecked truck apparently entered the westbound lanes and struck two Harley-Davidson motorcycles.
A 52-year-old man from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, who had been on one of the motorcycles reportedly sustained serious injuries as a result of the wreck. He was flown to an area medical facility in order to receive immediate treatment. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identity of the victim—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
People who are unfamiliar with these kinds of accidents might think they are just an unavoidable twist of fate. After over three decades in this line of business, I know that to be far from true. I’ve been involved with many truck accident investigations where tire failure was the catalyst, and I can tell you, more often than you might think, there were things that could absolutely have been done to prevent them from ever having happened in the first place.
To be clear, though, I’m not implying to know more about this specific accident than anyone else outside of the investigation does. It’s just that my experience with past cases involving 18-wheeler accidents caused by tire failure makes me hope that the people who are looking into this wreck are looking in the right places for answers.
For example, they should look at the inspection log and maintenance history for the truck. When was the last time the tires should have been serviced? Did they get that service when they should have? Was there any extra maintenance that the tire needed? If so, was it done? If the tire needed to be replaced, was it done so correctly? All of these are relevant questions that should be asked by any properly thorough investigation. It might even be wise to have an in-depth inspection done on the truck by trained professionals in a laboratory setting, just to make sure that nothing important falls through the cracks inadvertently.
It could end up that people who were not even present at the accident made decisions that played a direct role in the wreck and its outcome. The truth is, the people affected by this incident deserve answers, yes, but they also deserve to see that everyone who had a hand in the crash is held accountable for the role they played. That kind of result does not come from surface-level investigation.
