That motorcycle then struck the second Harley causing a crash.
When first responders arrived on the scene they found the driver of the first Harley deceased, with the second motorcycle seriously injured and transported them to the hospital. No identities have been released, and its unclear if any charges or citations will be filed.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Crashes involving motorcycles often result in outcomes far more severe than those involving passenger vehicles. In situations like this, the real questions go beyond the initial collision—they focus on how and why it happened in the first place.
Was the crash investigated with enough depth?
When a car crosses the center line and strikes a motorcycle head-on, it’s vital that investigators go beyond basic witness statements. Did they reconstruct the path of all vehicles involved? Was the positioning of each motorcycle carefully documented? These cases demand detailed measurements and scene mapping to establish exactly how the vehicles moved before impact. Some officers may be trained in advanced crash analysis, but others may not have the tools or experience to capture what’s needed for such a complex chain of events.
Could a vehicle defect have played a role?
When a vehicle suddenly veers out of its lane, it’s important not to jump to conclusions. Was there a steering failure? Could the Jetta have experienced an issue with its braking or lane-keeping systems? These aren’t questions that can be answered just by looking at the scene—they require hands-on inspection of the vehicle’s components. Without that, a key factor might be missed entirely.
Was all electronic evidence reviewed?
Most modern vehicles, including the Jetta, come equipped with systems that log critical data—speed, steering angle, and braking patterns just before a crash. That kind of information can clarify whether the driver took evasive action or whether the vehicle acted unpredictably. In some cases, dash cams or traffic footage may also be available. If that data was preserved, it can either confirm a theory or uncover new facts that weren’t obvious at first glance.
The path to real understanding doesn’t end at the scene. It moves through careful evidence gathering, critical inspection, and an openness to finding answers that aren’t always visible at first look.
Takeaways:
- Proper reconstruction is essential when multiple vehicles and impacts are involved.
- Mechanical failure in the vehicle crossing the line must be investigated.
- Electronic data and potential video footage can provide crucial insight into driver actions and vehicle behavior.
