How Did This Accident Occur?
In my experience, the most common reasons for an early morning, single-vehicle crash are fatigue, distraction, and alcohol. All of those are worth consideration, especially when a driver was on their way home from a bar that may have broken the law by over-serving them. But just because something is less common doesn’t mean it should be ignored. There could be all kinds of other factors that lead to a crash like this.
For example, I rarely ever see authorities inspect motorcycles for defects. I rarely see authorities look into possible manufacturing defects with typical cars, but they’re even less likely to inspect atypical vehicles, like motorcycles, three-wheelers, or mopeds. But just like a car, there can be unforeseeable issues. Faulty brakes, bad tires, malfunctioning steering or throttle mechanisms, etc. Unless experienced investigators with the right tools rule those possibilities out, important details could slip through the cracks without proper investigations.
So regardless of what happened here, it’s important to know that investigators are taking all possible factors seriously. That’s especially true considering how many people automatically assume the worst of motorcyclists. It’s best let the facts speak for themselves so no one’s bias gets in the way.
Are there any riders out there who have run into unexpected, unusual factors like brake failure? Let me know what happened in the comments.
