Accident Report
Vernon, CT — April 15, 2026, Mohamed Aweis was killed in a truck accident at about 11:30 p.m. on Interstate 84.
Authorities said an eastbound Freightliner semi-truck crashed into a Volvo semi-truck that had been parked on the shoulder between exits 66 and 67, near Belding Wildlife Management Area. The truck caught fire after the collision.
The driver of the Freightliner, 28-year-old Cleveland resident Mohamed Abdullahi Aweis, died in the crash, according to authorities.
The other truck driver was not injured, authorities said.
Authorities have not released any additional information about the Tolland County crash at this time. The accident is still under investigation.
How Did This Accident Occur?
Was the driver of the eastbound truck fatigued or distracted at the time of the crash? Did the truck have a problem with its steering mechanism that caused it to leave the interstate? Was the parked truck fully off the highway, with its hazard lights on and warning triangles set out? I don’t claim to know the answers to these questions, but they definitely must be addressed in the ongoing investigation.
Authorities likely will review witness statements, evidence from the scene, data from the trucks’ engine control modules and any available video of the crash, but in my opinion a thorough investigation should go further than that to consider the trucking companies’ role. It would be important to the victim’s family to know if the truck driver who crashed into the parked truck had been kept on the road to too many hours or if a dispatcher ordered the other truck to park somehwere it shouldn’t have been.
Authorities should be able to address any lingering questions haunting the family once the investigation is complete, otherwise the victim’s grieving loved ones may have to find someone else who can provide answers for them.
