Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Any commercial truck wreck can present significant challenges for investigators. It’s important they have the time, tools, and experience to navigate those challenges and get clear answers. What can surprise people is when authorities lack those resources and abilities.
Unfortunately, accident reconstruction isn’t always a high priority for departments. I’ve handled hundreds of commercial vehicle accident cases, and it’s pretty rare to find an officer that has handled more than one, maybe two truck wrecks in their whole career, let alone had all the tools and training needed to handle it.
Independent accident reconstructionists, though, are trained and experienced for exactly these kinds of crashes. That’s why they’re essential for my line of work, and a lot of police departments actually bring them in when they know they’re not able to handle a complex crash investigation on their own.
If an independent investigator looked into this crash and found that authorities did a good job on their own and got all facts, that would be good to hear. I just don’t think anyone should take that for granted.
